What is Counselling?
A counsellor provides a space where empathy and honesty are offered, as well as a non-judgmental environment, to enable you to feel safe enough to be vulnerable and authentic.
Why do people come to counselling?
People come to counselling for all sorts of reasons, it could be relationship difficulties, stress, feeling overwhelmed, anxiety, grief, self-doubt, sadness or feelings of hurt.
Counselling can help unearth feelings and situations which may be causing you distress from your past and can assist in helping you to understand yourself better, giving you time and space to let you be yourself and for your voice to be heard.
Does Counselling work?
It depends on a number of factors. The relationship between a client and their counsellor is a big one, therefore it is really important that you find a therapist who you can get on with. Therapy can help a person to uncover the root of their problems and give them a better understanding of their situation and themselves. Attending sessions regularly can improve the success of the work as issues are being worked on consistently. Over time clients begin to become more autonomous and able to address life challenges.
Timeframe
Counselling can be both long term or short term, it is client led, therefore the number of sessions is determined by the client. Work can be completed with 6 sessions to over a year, it really depends on the situation the client brings and how long they feel they want to work on certain issues.
